POSITION SUMMARY:
To support the Town’s safety culture, this position provides health and safety advice, coordination, coaching, expertise, and resources to Town employees to prevent and/or minimize occupational injuries and illness. The health & safety coordinator works as a member of the Human Resources team whose vision is to sustain a healthy and productive workplace.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Advises management and employees about safe work practices, safety standards and regulations
- Facilitates development, implementation, enhancement, and sustainment of the Town’s health and safety management and disability management programs, processes, and systems
- Supports the Town’s leadership and all departments to ensure the Health and Safety program is complaint with legislation and addresses Alberta Municipal Health and Safety Association (AMHSA) audit requirements
- Works with Human Resources and the Management team to optimize WCB claims; to manage and provides opportunities for early return to work following accident, injury, or illness
- Sits as a union representative on the Town’s Joint Health and Safety Committee
- Shares health and safety industry trends, best practices and new or emerging legislation
- Supports the development of safety core competencies through needs assessment, design, implementation and evaluation of safety and wellness training programs
- Works with current staff on the maintenance of existing safety management systems and records
- Maintenance of the Town’s Certificate of Recognition (COR) through maintaining the Health and Safety program and coordinating the annual audits utilizing the AMHSA Audit Tool
- Ensures Town of Taber Occupational Health and Safety manuals/handbooks are kept current for all departments
- Facilitates and tracks the corporate health and safety orientation for all staff
- Analyzes and assesses all incidents for trending and cost analysis to determine root causes and makes recommendations to prevent recurrence
- Conducts periodic inspections and monitors performance regarding compliance with Town health and safety systems and legislation
- Provides reports, statistical information and emergent issues to CAO, Senior Management, and the Joint Health and Safety Committee
- Provides proactive health and safety support, coaching, information, and guidance for all staff and management
- Develops and maintains strong working relationships with internal staff, external health and safety associations, agencies, and service providers
- Responds to requests for information or safety queries as appropriate
- Models appropriate safety behaviour and recognizes others who practice desirable safety protocols within ability to do so
- Assists Human Resources with reports to OH&S, WCB, and other regulator authorities as required
- Provides coaching and support to leaders in incident investigation; assists lead investigator in major incidents resulting in injury or property damage; ensure appropriate incident follow-up and documentation
- Visits sites and facilities to assist supervisors in monitoring safe work practices and procedures
- Ensures that external contractors have been provided with the Town of Taber Contractor Safety Handbook and have received an orientation on the appropriate sites and facilities
- Performs other related duties as directed by the Human Resources Manager
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of three to five years of occupations health and safety experience in a leadership role, ideally in a municipal government or public sector environment
- Health and Safety Advisor Certification or currently working towards your certification
- Current Peer Health and Safety Auditor certification
- In depth knowledge of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Legislation
- Current First Aid and WHMIS
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Driver’s license
- Ability to provide a clean Police Information Check.
This position falls within CUPE LOCAL 2038
TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: Permanent Full Time
HOURS OF WORK: 37.5 hrs/week, 8:00am to 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.
HOURLY WAGE: $31.91 per hour with full benefits and pension
START DATE: As soon as possible
