Viticulturist
Reports to: Dual Reporting: President & General Manager
Summary:
The Viticulturist manages the technical vineyard operations to ensure quality grape production through implementation of pest and disease control, canopy management, pruning and fertilizer plans, frost control, winter hardiness, grape quality improvement, as well as internal and collaborative research and development. The Vineyard and Irrigation Manager is responsible to lead the team and give guidance to produce quality grapes.
Responsibilities:
- Ensure viticulture practises maximize efficiency and ensure that yield targets are met accordingly
- Provide monthly variance reporting and explanation, along with a plan to fix variances moving forward
- Recruit, train, oversee and motivate vineyard labour
- Manage all internal and contracted grape acres for insects, disease, fertilization, weed control, crop load, irrigation, and canopy management
- Manage the viticulture technical budget and ensure costs are controlled
- Provide annual vineyard plans and crop estimates on assigned vineyard
- Oversee crop maturity sampling and monitoring of vineyard conditions during Harvest.
- Conduct practical and relevant research to improve production, fruit quality and operations efficiency
- Lead the Temporary Foreign Worker Program
- Operate machinery, and train others in safe equipment operations-SOPs
- Monitor vineyard facilities, equipment and ensure maintenance tasks and repairs are carried out as required.
- Participate actively and constructively as a part of the Frind Estate Winery management team
- Monitor irrigation management in all Vineyards
- Oversee the collection of vineyard data; ensure that reports are produced in a timely manner.
- Follow safe operating procedures, support safety programs and policies to safeguard personal safety, company property and team members safety.
- Maintain positive grower relations. Ensure that quality parameters are met from our growers. Manage contracts accordingly.
Skills:
- Advanced knowledge of growing practices including vineyard design, nutrient requirements, and pest control.
- Advanced knowledge of the use of pesticides, their mode of action, and their impact on vineyard ecology.
- Intermediate computer skills.
- Advanced knowledge of spray application techniques and sprayer calibration.
- Knowledge of government programs and industry frameworks
Requirements:
- Minimum 5 years related experience in vineyard technical services and vineyard management
- Bachelor’s degree in agriculture, viticulture or plant science, considered an asset.
- Current Drivers License
- Frequent local travel
- Physically fit
- Exposure to working outside in hot, dry, cold and wet conditions

Salary: $41,957.69-$90,000.00 per year
