The Vice President & General Manager of the Cote Gold mine site provides leadership and direction to the site management team to ensure the achievement of business objectives at optimum efficiency and minimum cost consistent with safe operating procedures, applicable laws, and sound business practices in a fashion consistent with the values and principles of IAMGOLD. Collaborates with Corporate, Regional and other site leaders in the global implementation of best practices to leverage efficiencies. Ensures that community, media and government relations are carried out in a manner consistent with corporate philosophy. Challenges the status quo and envision new opportunities within the operation and across the organization. During the construction phase of Côté Gold, the VPGM will lead the Operational Readiness strategy and will oversee its implementation while working in partnership with the Project Construction Team to ensure full operation and financial completion is achieved.


Role Details


Drives Excellence in Execution: Enables breakthrough results through organizational alignment, courageous action, new thinking, and accountability. (20-30%)


Key Area:

  • Manage all aspects of the mine operations, including safety, mining, milling, maintenance, engineering, geology, administration, and environment in the setting and achieving of business objectives and KPIs.
  • Duties: Accountable for health and safety program and performance at the operation.
  • Ensure that laws, regulations, and Corporate policies are adhered to.
  • Ensure that operational objectives are established in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Ensure the required workforce and equipment are in place to achieve operational objectives and KPIs.
  • Develop and monitor budgets to ensure operating margins are met and recommend and implement corrective actions to ensure production objectives and quality solutions are implemented. Accountable for the approval and oversight of capital project budgets for the site as appropriate.
  • Oversee the site risk management program including regular identification and assessment of operational and business risks and implementation and monitoring of risk mitigation plans.
  • Responsible for timely, accurate and well communicated reporting of business performance.
  • Drive the development and implementation of continuous improvement innovations to systems and processes that will drive the operational results.
  • Responsible for independent auditing of the operation; monitoring and addressing variances.
  • Responsible for delivering annual business plans and strategic business plans (life of mine) to the Corporation that will maximize the value of the mine, including preparation and presentation of alternative scenarios as may be appropriate
  • Ensure that sustainable exploration programs are developed, resourced and implemented that are consistent with corporate strategic goals including maximizing the asset value of the operation, including to replace gold reserves that are mined annually.

  • Applies Strategic Thinking & Global Focus: Brings a global mindset and systemic thinking to support the strategic focus and future success of the organization. (10-15%)

Key Area: Translate organizational strategy into operational strategy, determining how the operation can contribute to achieving the overall purpose and strategy of the Corporation. Act as the senior Corporate representative and spokesperson on site.


Duties:

  • Provide operational input into the overall organizational strategy and key objectives.
  • Translate corporate objectives into the local context and set direction.
  • Ensure alignment with Corporate guidance and directives.
  • Champion the Corporate initiatives that further the performance of the company in Zero Harm.
  • Interact and collaborate with the other GMs and Corporate senior leaders within IAMGOLD to support the overall goals of the corporation.
  • Actively support talent development and mobility of high potential/high performing resources for the greater benefit of the organization.

  • Builds Diverse Stakeholder relationships: Proactively develops strong and mutually beneficial relationships with multiple stakeholders. (20-30%)


Key Area: Establish and build relationships with key stakeholders both internally and externally, including but not limited to government, First Nations, local and regional communities, union groups, key vendors and associations.


Duties:

  • Interact with national, regional, and local officials as well as other relevant stakeholders to ensure that organizational objectives are met.
  • Understand, anticipate and keep senior leaders informed on a proactive basis regarding operational, political and economic issues and any potential impacts to IAMGOLD operations and business mandate and develop strategies to mitigate risk.
  • Provide open honest clear & timely communication to all levels of the business.
  • Enable and foster positive working relations with local union/employee groups.
  • Listen & provide feedback to all levels of the operation.
  • Participate in stakeholder dialog and address issues as required.

  • Demonstrates Personal Leadership: Takes personal ownership for the success of the organization achieved through candor, creative debate, active listening, coaching and a commitment to self-improvement. (10-15%)

Key Area: Exemplify desired leadership capabilities through all interactions with employees, management, and stakeholders at the site, regional, and global level.


Duties:

  • Engage employees at all levels to champion health & safety, and to promote a robust Zero Harm culture.
  • Provide strategic input into the design and implementation of global talent management initiatives (SLDP, L.E.A.D., PMP, MBA, etc.) Lead by example and encourage site leadership in support of one company, one brand.
  • Practice and encourage visual felt leadership. Be visible to all levels of employees through frequent planned and informal site visits and/or meetings.
  • Create and lead the core site leadership team to provide continuity for the business during absences.
  • Recognize strong performance and hold individuals accountable for poor performance.
  • Enable employee engagement and empowerment through regular communication of strategy, objectives and results.
  • Promote and maintain a high performance culture throughout the operation.
  • Model the Corporate values and ensure employees are treated in a manner that is consistent with them.
  • Develops People, Teams, & Culture: Maximizes the potential of individuals, teams, and culture through a targeted investment in coaching, development, and engagement. (25-30%)


Key Area: Provide leadership to the site management team in the development and achievement of KPIs and goals and the overall strategy of the operation.


Duties:

  • Clearly articulate each department’s mandate, objectives and performance expectations required to achieve business plans and production targets.
  • Establish context and coordinate integration between Department Heads.
  • Enable a learning culture through the establishment of learning and development programs that ensure employees have the necessary tools, skills, and leadership support to achieve individual and team objectives.
  • Ensure succession plans are in place for each member of the site management team as well as for identified critical roles. Participate in the development of high potential leaders (2nd and 3rd levels).
  • Delegate as appropriate and provide ongoing support.
  • Engage team in development of vision, strategy and objectives. Be open to new ideas.
  • Participate in attraction and selection process of key site level roles.
  • Drive national development and succession.


Qualifications

What You Need to Succeed


Bachelor’s degree, preferably in engineering (mining, geology, metallurgy) OR

Technical diploma (mining, geology, metallurgy) with extensive experience or previous experience in the role

MBA an asset

A minimum of 15 years’ experience in mining operations, preferably in open pit, and in engineering, with a significant portion of that time preferably spent in gold mining

A minimum of 10 years experience leading management teams in mining

Proven track record/experience in change management

Experience in implementing leading edge technologies

Canadian experience with government relations, community relations and public affairs

Strong leadership skills, ability to impact and influence at all levels

High degree of business acumen

Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Ability to be a team player and has proven relationship building skills

Ability to motivate and inspire; is visionary; creative and flexible

Strong negotiation skills

Cultural sensitivity and political savvy

Ability to recognize and source key skills inside/outside of the organization to give the Company a competitive edge


Côté Gold was developed in partnership with the Mattagami and Flying Post First Nations. The open-pit mine is a joint venture between IAMGOLD and Sumitomo Metal Mining Co. and is operated by IAMGOLD.
