Superintendent Vehicle Servicing Job at City of Winnipeg
Under the general direction of the Manager of Plant and Equipment, the Superintendent of Vehicle Servicing is responsible for the regular servicing and cleaning of all Transit vehicles including buses, cars, trucks and support vehicles, and for the oversight of cleaning of Brandon Garage, North Garage and Building B. As a member of the Division Management Team, the Superintendent participates in the development of division plans and policies. The Superintendent is essentially on call 24 hours/seven days a week.
As the Superintendent of Vehicle Servicing, you will:
- Lead a total workforce of approximately 65 employees including Supervisors, In-Charges, Fare Box/Bus Servicers, General Helpers and Maintenance Workers who are responsible for vehicle servicing, facilities cleaning and shop caretaking functions.
- Manage the selection, training and work performance of all Vehicle Servicing and Garage cleaning employees to ensure the most efficient and effective use of resources.
- Provide administrative support services for a variety of areas within the Plant and Equipment Division and schedule staff on a weekly basis to meet their needs.
- Ensure sufficient safe, serviced and clean vehicles (up to 550 buses a day) meet defined transit service requirements and the needs of transit’s operational and maintenance support units.
- Ensure efficient operation of the Servicing branch within the current estimates approved by City Council, including involvement in budget development and in development and updating of division plans, policies and Vehicle Servicing standards.
- Manage the ongoing continuous improvement of vehicle servicing and garage cleaning programs.
- Manage the tri-annual work signup and annual vacation signup for Bus Servicers and General Helpers.
- Perform labour relations functions in the Vehicle Servicing Branch and chair first stage grievance hearings.
- Assist in developing division budgets and managing Branch expenditures.
- Manage supply and service contracts for the Vehicle Servicing Branch.
- Assist the Manager in setting objectives and priorities within the Plant and Equipment Division.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Industrial Supervision Certificate or other related certificate or combination of education, training and experience
- Minimum of five (5) years’ management/supervisory experience
- Experience directing others, managing conflict, building effective teams and motivating others
- Experience in investigating complaints and managing employee/labour relations issues
- Experience creating efficient and effective work schedules for a workforce with varied shifts
- Ability to manage financial, human and material resources
- Experience administering and interpreting collective agreements and related experience in a 24/7 Vehicle Servicing operations are desirable
- Must be able to work independently, analyze complex situations, prioritize competing demands, and make effective decisions based on sound judgment
- Demonstrated effective organizational, planning and leadership skills
- Demonstrated ability to prepare written material and deliver presentations
- Working knowledge of management information systems and current computer applications specifically MS Office Suite
- Demonstrated effective interpersonal skills and ability to work with all levels of the organization as well as with union officials
- Demonstrated ability to adhere to the requirements of the Respectful Workplace Standard.
- Working knowledge of policies, procedures and past practices used in Transit Department is an asset
Conditions of employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 5 licence and be able to obtain a Manitoba Class 2 Driver’s Licence with Air Brake Endorsement, within two months of employment (in house training).
- Must be able to work in an environment where there is exposure to dust, noise, extreme temperature/weather conditions, diesel exhaust fumes and chemical agents used in the mechanical field
