Madsen Controls & Engineering, the Canadian distributor and integrator for top-tier industrial control system and power management equipment, has an opening for an Electrical Power Systems Engineer in its Ontario operation. Madsen has a significant installation base of its products in hydro, mining, pulp and paper, oil & gas, marine and power generation markets throughout Ontario. The Electrical Power Systems Engineer will have significant experience in one or more of these markets and will assist industrial customers with complex power generation requirements and power system studies throughout the region.
As the successful candidate, you must be an excellent leader, problem solver, able to manage your time and efforts, be comfortable working both independently and with cross-departmental teams and have good communication skills. You must be willing to travel throughout Ontario as needed. You must be versatile and open to learning and being able to advise customers on in-depth technical discussions. You will be expected to play a leading role in problem resolution from a technical viewpoint.
Compensation for this role will consist of salary and paid, billable overtime on-site. Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform engineering design and troubleshooting of industrial electrical power systems
- Perform electrical power system studies, protection and control systems design and settings
- Determine design deliverables and develop engineering scope of work document
- Handle the application, design, configuration, and commissioning of electrical equipment
- Consult on capital projects development including feasibility studies, project scope definitions, capital cost estimates, preliminary and detailed engineering designs
- Lead troubleshooting of electrical power distribution systems and equipment
- Holds a key understanding of the project lifecycle, facility lifecycle and the engineering process
- Coordinate engineering activities for the defined area of responsibility for the full project life cycle and perform site investigations and field reviews
- Perform calculations and studies in load flow, short circuits, motor starting, protection relay settings, electrical coordination, grounding, equipment sizing, and arc flash ratings
- Review and develop control diagrams, complete electrical documentation packages: SOW, GAs, SLDs, narratives, schematics, BOMs, cable schedules, and wiring diagrams
- Prepare technical electrical specifications and in-house electrical standards
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering - Electrical, Power Systems background. Experience in power generation and protective relaying is preferred.
- P.Eng. designation is preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of relevant design experience is required
- Experience working at both an engineering firm and large industrial end user is an asset
- Experience working on industrial and/or utility projects is a must
- Experience in relaying and protection is an asset
- Experience in design applications of Variable Speed Drives, Motor Control Centers, industrial motors, power factor correction is an asset
- Protection, automation and SCADA experience is preferable
- Experience configuring and setting microprocessor relays is preferable
- Understanding of relay communications networks, standards (e.g., IEC 61850) and protocols such as GOOSE, MMS, Modbus, DNP 3, etc. is an asset
- Knowledge of generator sizing calculations and controls, load sharing, load shedding and power management
- In-depth knowledge of MCC, and LV & MV Switchgear specifications and design is an asset
- Strong understanding of power analysis software
- Possess strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills
- Strong knowledge of electrical principles, low and medium voltage distribution design, and protection & relaying design.

Salary: $90,000.00-$160,000.00 per year
