Transportation of Dangerous Goods Program Officer Student

INTRO

The Transport and Dangerous Goods (TDG) Program team is part of Environmental Remediation Management (ERM) organisation at Canadian Nuclear Laboratories (CNL). The TDG Program team ensures compliance with Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and Transport Canada (TC) Regulations for the transportation of Dangerous Goods (DG) within Canada and internationally. TDG Program work primarily deals with Class 7 Radioactive Materials for DG, but is responsible for providing oversight and guidance on all nine classes of DG.


TDG Program reviews and approves for use information on specific packagings users have selected for their projects, including writing or approving usage procedures after providing applicable technical support for the design, fabrication, use, maintenance , certification and licensing of the packagings.


TDG Program provides the mandatory training required for all workers handling and packing DG in appropriate, approved containers for safely and compliantly shipping DG to, from and with CNL sites.


This opportunity will enable an engineering or science student to apply their skills and learn about the different types of DG packages (mainly the five types of Class 7 Radioactive Materials packages) CNL uses for safely transporting hazardous substances to and from Chalk River.


DUTIES

  • Complete all assigned instructor led (online and in-person) training courses and online e-learning courses mandatory for CNL Nuclear Energy Workers and TDG Program Officers.
  • Write a Required Project Report:
    • Summarizing the hierarchy of packaging types and the technical requirements of each packaging type, and
    • Providing example of CNL packages in each category, how CNL uses them and the main regulations which apply to each category.

In addition to the Project Report, the student will also work with the TDG Program on some of the activities listed below

  • Support TDG Program Officers maintaining TDG Program Approved Packaging List (APL) and associated documents.
  • Support TDG Program staff organizing TDG Program documentation in ATOM database and on TDG Program network drives.
  • Write and review drafts of Packaging Approval Reports for UN-rated and DG Class 7 Exempt and Excepted packagings to be added to the APL.
  • Obtain missing or required supporting documents for Packaging Approval Reports from third parties such as Vendors, Suppliers, Package Owners and package users.
  • Attend virtual and in-person meetings with TDG staff, potentially including field visits or third-party benchmarking trips, as required.
  • Provide regular updates on progress and status of assignments to supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS

Interpersonal: Strong communication skills (orally and in writing); self-confident; questioning attitude; self-starter/motivated; organized; able to meet deadlines; able to work effectively as a remote worker over Teams/Skype and emails

Technical: Familiarity with Skype, MS Teams Office Suite; report-writing capability; awareness of nuclear/radioactive materials regulations, codes and standards and previous experience working at a nuclear facility would be an asset; logical thinker for comprehending sometimes convoluted sections of Regulatory documents; secure location with broadband internet is required for work
