INTRO
The Environmental Monitoring Branch is a well-established team of professionals, technologists and field workers who provide technical services, information, and evaluations that support the environmental monitoring of CNL sites. The team is actively involved in developing, maintaining, and facilitating environmental monitoring at CNL.

The Drilling Technician is expected to have an enhanced level of knowledge and skill for the development and maintenance of wells and boreholes on the Chalk River Site within the bounds of all regulatory requirements. This position is expected to be capable of drilling the more complex wells often required, as well as directly and indirectly overseeing the drilling operations of drill rig operators and providing assistance as required. The Drilling Technician will also have geological knowledge and be capable of producing borehole logs and collecting both radiological and non-radiological samples.

DUTIES

  • Drill Rig Supervisor & Operator
  • To perform complex drilling operations for both the collection of representative samples from boreholes and to construct either simple or complex well (multi-level wells or wells in difficult and complex media such as flowing sands are hard bedrock) using both rotary and percussive drill rigs.
  • To oversee and supervise, either directly or indirectly, the drilling of bore holes and construction of wells by drill rig operators.
  • Ensure that Regulatory requirements of Reg 903 for well development and bore hole drilling are met.
  • Proper well maintenance and proper well abandonment
  • Maintenance and repair of existing wells on site maintaining established well parameters.
  • Collection of routine and complex water levels from the network of wells across the site as directed by program hydrogeologists.
  • development and cleaning of wells in preparation of sample collection.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:

  • Two year well drilling technician diploma or equivalent extensive experience (at least 4,000 detailed documented well and borehole drilling experience, plus Ontario Drilling Technician Exam)
  • Ontario Well Technician License

Experience:

  • Dependent on level

Abilities and Skills:

  • Operational knowledge of rotary and direct push drill rigs
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements in Ontario's Well Regulation regarding, geology, hydrogeology, well siting, drilling systems, well construction, well installation, annular space and sealing, pump installations, test pumping the well, disinfecting, well records, well abandonment and flowing wells.
  • Collection and preservation of samples
  • Processing of soil samples for radiological, chemical and geological analyses
  • Recording borehole and well information (logs)
  • knowledge of borehole sealants
  • knowledge of proper well abandonment techniques
  • Collection of water level data and collection of groundwater samples

Job/Industry Specific Knowledge:

  • Ability to set up and safely operate drill rigs and troubleshoot technical issues, including rig operation and stuck augers
  • Drill rig maintenance and preventative maintenance
  • Knowledge of drill rig hydraulics and water pressures
  • Knowledge of working in radiological hazardous environments.
