About The Position:

We are seeking caring and compassionate individuals who can provide companionship and social support to a socially isolated senior. You will visit with a Polish speaking senior who is homebound and isolated, connecting with the senior to play Bridge (card game) and an avid Bridge game player. In addition, hear stories, go for walks, engage in conversation and social programs. Your time will help to reduce their loneliness and improve their quality of life.

Location:

The senior lives at a Seniors Retirement Residence in Brampton. This role will take place at that location.

What You’ll Be Doing:

• Help Elder Help Peel’s client remain independent and social by providing support and companionship
• Meet with your senior match that resides at a senior’s retirement residence on a weekly basis
• Arrange a suitable time to visit and play bridge on a regular basis and ensure punctuality
• Engage in friendly conversation and leisure activities (playing bridge, walks) and provide support through friendship
• Offer social companionship and social interactions
• Follow Elder Help Peel’s policies and procedures, adhere to and follow program specific guidelines
• Record and submit weekly hours/activities and report any incidences, accidents or concerns to the Volunteer Program Coordinator

What We’re Seeking:

• A volunteer who plays Bridge, an avid Bridge card game player, an asset
• Must speak fluent English, required
• Speaks Polish, an asset
• Patient and compassionate with a desire to help older adults living isolated and on a low income
• Ability to work with people in a professional, empathetic manner
• Effective verbal and listening communication skills
• Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information
• Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds and build strong working relationships

Commitment:

Your gift of time, talent and energy is crucial to the success of this program. We require volunteers to commit to 1-2 two hours per week for a 6 month minimum period. Being consistently reliable is a key attribute of this position.

Shift Times:

Volunteer shifts will vary depending on your and your senior match’s availability. The majority of our clients prefer to meet during regular business hours (Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm).

Training:

Orientation to Elder Help Peel’s Friendly Visitor Program, policies, and procedures

Each volunteer is required to provide:

• A Vulnerable Sector Screening from Peel Police Services
• Must be 20+, Canadian identification and Social Insurance Number required to obtain a police record check
• Proof of COVID-19 vaccination (2 primary doses minimum)

• Applicants must reside in Peel Region (Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon) for "in-person" social interactions with a senior
• No out-of-Canada applications will be considered
• Student practicum/co-op placements and high school hours are not offered through this volunteer role
