Temporary Environmental Scientist

Location

Copper Mountain Mine, is located near the town of Princeton, British Columbia at the center of the scenic Similkameen Valley. Princeton is a community-oriented town with a diverse offering of activities, especially for those who love the outdoors. Princeton is also in close proximity to both the City of Vancouver and the Okanagan.

Summary

Reporting to the Environmental Manager, the Environmental Scientist is responsible for writing and reviewing technical reports, coordinating and conducting a broad range of environmental and reclamation projects while providing technical support to the operational monitoring programs and permitting projects.

This is a Temporary position (12-18 months). This position is currently temporary with an opportunity to become permanent.

Key Responsibilities

· Write and review scientific and technical reports,

· Coordinate and conduct a broad range of environmental projects such as baseline assessments, reclamation activities, and environmental and reclamation research, including project planning, sample and data collection, data analysis and reporting, and coordinating activities of consultants, mine staff, and equipment necessary to complete the projects,

· Assist in maintaining legal compliance with permit and legislation requirements through sample collection, data management, data analysis and report writing,

· Manage environmental database (MonitorPro),

· Perform data quality and control analysis on internal and external data and implements improvements as needed to data quality objectives,

· Assist in various routine environmental monitoring field tasks as needed, such as surface and groundwater sampling, flow measurements, air quality monitoring, and data downloads,

· Add to the development, update, and implementation of environmental management plans and reclamation plans, and monitoring of compliance with the plans,

· Contribute to the preparation of internal month-end reports and quarterly and annual regulatory reports,

· Promote environmental awareness and standards relating to environmental programs to employees and contractors to minimize any risk of negative impacts to the environment,

· Aid in environmental emergency response and partakes in investigations of environmental incidents,

· Performs any other responsibilities related to the Environmental Scientist role as required or as assigned by the department head.

Education & Experience

· Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geology, Agrology, Biology or Environmental Sciences along with eligibility for a professional designation,

· Minimum of five (5) years of progressive experience in mining, or upstream oil and gas,

· Work in multiple settings, both geographically and industrially is considered an asset,

· Demonstrated experience encompassing project execution, contractor supervision, and project coordination,

· Established technical skills in field activities related to Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessments (ESA) including groundwater monitoring and sampling techniques, various drilling techniques, soil sample collection and logging, soil vapour sampling, remedial excavations, spill response and quality assurance/quality control protocols,

· Proven proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Access),

· Possess a valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and have access to personal transportation.

Required Skills

· Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong analytical and conceptual thinking skills to present ideas clearly,

· Skill in developing and maintaining positive relationships and representing Copper Mountain Mine positively in the community,

· Strong knowledge and understanding and appropriately applying prescribed environmental, safety and technical protocols,

· Self-motivated, high energy, strong organizational and time management skills.

Working Conditions

· Work consists of a team environment with regularly scheduled and ad-hoc meetings,

· Frequent exposure to sitting at a computer doing work online,

· Role may operate in a potentially stressful environment caused by constant requests from several people causing uncertainty and ambiguity,

· Work may require the employee to be physically capable of working outside on difficult terrain and in all weather conditions,

· Exposure to associated risks involved with field specimen, data, and sample collection,

· Work will require operating a light vehicle at our operations, in various weather conditions and terrain, including winter driving.
