This role works onsite/in-person at our SE Calgary program location
Shifts:
Day (8 AM - 4 PM)
Afternoon (2 - 10 PM)
Overnight Awake* (10 PM - 8 AM)
Preference is given to applicants with availability for all 3 shifts.

ABOUT
Bedford House is a community residential facility program that provides housing, counselling, support and connections to community services to program residents. Staffed 24 hours a day, Bedford House is a program through the Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) that provides apartment-style independent living to men who are on federal conditional release.
Since 1949, The Calgary John Howard Society (CJHS) has been working to remove barriers to housing, education and employment faced by youth and adults who are (or have been) involved in the criminal justice system. The collective focus of our residential and community programs is to make Calgary communities safer through social development, restorative justice, and guiding the youth and adults in our programs to make positive life changes and discover alternatives to breaking the law.
The Relief Worker is part of a team of round the clock staff who supervise and support our client residents. In addition to addressing the day-to-day needs of the facility and ensuring community safety, they act as a positive role models and communicators while interacting with our program residents.
The successful candidate will be required to provide:
- Proof of immunization against COVID-19
- A Police Information Check (PIC)
- Satisfactory references
RESPONSIBILITIES & SCOPE OF EMPLOYMENT
The primary focus and areas of responsibility include:
- Resident supervision and support with day-to-day tasks
- Communication of and adherence to facility policies
- Directing and managing crisis or conflict situations
The scope of employment may include:
- Sitting at a desk for multiple consecutive hours
- Lifting and/or moving boxes and other items that weigh up to 40 lbs
- Being subject to potential difficult client situations that involve the impact of trauma and/or death of clients
EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION
- Post-secondary education/certification/training with a social services focus (or in progress), is an asset but is not required
- Experience and knowledge of trauma-informed care and of the non-profit sector is an asset
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Physically able to lift items up to 40 lbs, climb stairs and alternate between sitting and standing
- Ability to guide and direct program residents and other attendees on facility policies and requirements
- Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work with minimal supervision and be self-motivated
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to maintain and communicate professional boundaries
