The North Shore Health Network provides rural healthcare for communities along the north shore of Lake Huron – including services in Blind River, Thessalon and Richards Landing. The North Shore Health Network sites have been serving their communities faithfully for many years providing emergency, acute, complex continuing care, long term care and community support services.
The Role:
The Behavioural Support (BSO) nurse provides direct support and expertise in assessing, planning, and providing care to clients experiencing responsive behaviours related to dementia, mental health, addictions or neurological disorders.
Responsibilities:
Rooted in person, family and relationship-centred care, works collaboratively with the referred individual, their family care partners, the referral clinical team and other partners in the provision of the following:
- Conducts a comprehensive behavioural assessment
- Collaboratively develops a tailored approach/strategy contributing to a person-centred behavioural support plan
- Supports the implementation and/or delivery of the person-centred behavioural support plan
- Monitors and evaluates the outcomes and adjusts the plan as needed
Qualifications:
- Registered Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
- Certificate or training in geriatric care such as Principle of Dementia Care, P.I.E.C.E.S, Montessori methods, Gentle Persuasive Approach, U-First considered a strong asset
- Completed culturally sensitive care courses and incorporated knowledge into practice
- 3 years of current experience working with geriatric clients/patients/residents
- Strong medical assessment skills and knowledge of medical/biological issues as they relate to the aging process (knowledge of delirium, risk factors, medications etc.
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practice for dementia, delirium, depression, and other mental health issues and their effect on the patient and family
- Understanding of non-pharmacological and therapeutic behavioural approaches
- Understanding of pharmacological agents and their interactions that are used to manage conditions that have behavioural components along the disease continuum
- Knowledge of adult learning principles
- Knowledge of community and multi-disciplinary resources
- Ability to function as an effective and collaborative member of the Geriatric Inter-disciplinary Team
- Demonstrates professional work ethic and behaviours in interactions with internal and external contacts
- Excellent critical thinking skills for early detection, intervention, and prevention of responsive behaviours
- Clear criminal record
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal;
- Fluently bilingual (English & French) considered a strong asset.
Wages:
$35.95 to $51.47
