Procurement Services provides services to both Public Safety and Emergency Services, and Justice, which are two of the most complex ministries within the Government of Alberta; playing a leading role across the spectrum of the justice system. Working alongside its partners in law enforcement, family justices, health, the judiciary, criminal justice system and other stakeholders, the ministries have a direct or shared responsibility in all elements of the justice system in Alberta. The procurement of goods and services to meet the many diverse business needs within the ministries offer unique and challenging experiences.
Role
Reporting to the Procurement Manager, the Purchasing Agent is responsible for the efficient and cost effective acquisition of broad range of commodities on behalf of Ministry Stakeholders. This position performs the 1GX Purchasing Agent role for the ministries, which includes reviewing Purchase Requisitions (PR) to determine if proper process is being utilized, creating Sourcing Requests (SR), managing certain aspects of Purchase Orders (PO), reassigning receipts upon request, assisting with PR/PO and invoice exception questions and issues, routing requests to appropriate areas for processing, and providing guidance and assistance to Purchasing Users within the ministries.
Other responsibilities include:
- Acquire goods and services in compliance with applicable legislations, regulations, procedures and Trade Agreements so Ministry programs are effectively delivered in a timely and efficient manner;
- Prepare and process various acquisition documents; and
- Initiate and administer the purchasing process, including the creation of purchase requisitions and sourcing requests, and necessary forwarding for further processing when required.
The successful candidate is expected to have:
- Excellent organizational and time management skills;
- High level of attention to details, with the ability to communicate details both verbally and in writing;
- Data analyst experience such as maintaining databases, performing analysis to assess quality of data via reporting tools, ability to understand how a database works and the impacts of the various functionalities within it, and ability to filter and prepare data pulled from reports for management and executive review;
- Excellent negotiation, judgement, and conflict resolution and mediation skills; and
- Good knowledge of Microsoft Office Suites programs and functions including Microsoft Office Word, Outlook and Excel.
Qualifications
Two-year diploma in a related field such as Business, and Commerce; no experience required; or equivalent as described below.
Equivalency:
Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Assets:
Preference will be given to candidates with:
- A related designation
- Specialization in supply chain management
- Experience working in a buyer or procurement specialist role
- Experience with SAP Ariba (1GX) Procure to Pay functionality
- Knowledge and understanding of trade agreements and procurement in the public sector

Salary
$2,133.27 to $2,773.10 bi-weekly ($55,678.34 - $72,377.91/ year)
