Overview

Pembina Pipeline Corporation’s Redwater office is recruiting for a Lab Technologist to join the team. The Lab Technician will execute laboratory quality assurance tasks, that may include sampling, lab analysis, results distribution, equipment troubleshooting & maintenance and any other tasks assigned. In addition, the Lab Technologist may be assigned to work on special projects that involve laboratory services, quality issues, and process optimization activities.


Reporting to the Supervisor of Quality and Integrity at the Redwater Facility, the individual will join an experienced team responsible for supporting the facility’s on-stream and finished product quality control and assurance efforts.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Collect routine and spot samples in the plant on numerous streams, associated with NGL fractionation operations, pipelines, cavern storage, truck, and rail terminal operations;
  • Execution of wet chemistry analysis (acid/base and Karl Fischer titrations, Reid Vapor Pressures, density verifications) on various product and utility streams;
  • Calibration, operation, and maintenance of wet chemistry instruments;
  • Operating various gas chromatographs utilized at the facility, including calibration, equipment maintenance, troubleshooting, and method development;
  • Review, interpret, and report lab results. Investigate abnormal and off-spec results. Compare results to recognized industry and facility product specifications;
  • Develop and update laboratory procedures;
  • Change out carrier gas and calibration standards for lab instruments;
  • Work closely with plant operations to monitor and troubleshoot operational performance and quality control issues;
  • Interface with Third Party labs on outsourced analyses; and
  • Participate and support an equitable, diverse, and inclusive workplace.

Job Qualifications

  • A diploma in Chemical Technology or a B. Sc. in Chemistry;
  • 4+ years Lab Technologist/Technician experience in a petrochemical/refinery plant or third-party laboratory with a field support role;
  • Ability to work in fast paced, ever changing environment as both an individual and team member;
  • Effective organization, communication and interpersonal skills are required;
  • A motivated self-starter with attention to detail;
  • Strong analytical and trouble shooting skills for interpreting and actioning abnormal results; and
  • Valid driver’s license.


The following are considered an asset for this position:

  • Familiarity with ASTM and UOP laboratory analysis standards and procedures used in the chemical industry as well as SDS / GHS/ TDG;
  • Past experience running Speciated sulfur and hydrocarbon analysis on gas chromatographs including identification and quantification components and contaminants;
  • Previous experience with laboratory equipment manufactured by Agilent Technologies, Metrohm, Anton Parr, and Grabner;
  • Experience in an operating plant and familiar with plant risks and sampling risks;
  • Assembling process connections to collect samples (including Swagelok tubing, hoses, piping); and
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and Agilent OpenLab.


This position is considered “Safety Sensitive” so will require Pre-Employment Drug & Alcohol Testing. You may also be required to provide a Driver’s Abstract.


The successful candidate must live within 100 km of Redwater.
