Job description – Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Technician

Our clinic is located in Mississauga, Ontario providing safe and effective hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment since 2008 for many conditions, including but not limited to chronic non-healing wounds, delayed radiation injury (cystitis/proctitis/Radionecrosis), Sudden Hearing Loss, Crush Injury, concussions, brain injuries, etc.
We are seeking current healthcare professionals certified or licensed as applicable (to be maintained throughout the duration of employment in this role). Qualified healthcare providers include Respiratory Therapist, Registered Practical Nurse, or other regulated health care provider with preference for Paramedic (basic, Intermediate), or Physician Assistant.
Reporting to the Under Pressure Operations Manager and the Medical Director, and in accordance with the Under Pressure Policy & Procedure, the Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy technician will be responsible for:
- Safe/effective operation of the hyperbaric chambers and related support systems as prescribed by the attending physician
- Demonstrating knowledge and skills necessary to provide safe Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) in accordance with physician orders and Policy &Procedures. This includes pre-HBOT patient assessment & preparation, monitoring/observation during HBOT including addressing distressful or emergent situations arising during therapy, and post-HBOT assessments prior to discharge from the clinic
- Collection of patient’s vitals, glucose monitoring
- Communication with clinic medical staff, operation staff and accompanying parent/guardian/family members regarding care issues and/or concerns per the plan of care or as identified by the technician during the course of care
- Preparing the hyperbaric chamber, equipment, and materials as needed for patients undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy
- Transferring patients from wheelchair to gurney
- Inspection, cleaning of chamber, equipment after every treatment
- Accurate and complete recording of patient records into EMR
- Maintaining of professional appearance
- Enhanced COVID-19 protocol : Temperature Screening / Ongoing risk assessment / PPE (isolation gowns, gloves, mask, face shield) / Social distancing / Ongoing sanitizing, disinfecting, and cleaning procedures
Qualifications:
- Regulated health professional standing with preference for Paramedic (basic, intermediate), Respiratory Therapist, Registered Practical Nurse, physician assistant or other regulated health care provider
- Consideration given to Diving Technicians or similar military training
- Must attend onsite orientation, mentoring and observation sessions with current UP technicians
- Annual Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR and AED certification mandatory, and to be maintained throughout the duration of employment
- Superior organizational and time management skills with ability to adapt quickly to unexpected changes that can occur in the UP environment
- Flexibility, able to adapt to schedule changes or work assignment changes
- Hours of operation are 6:30am to 6:30pm, with shift lengths between 6 and 10 hours per day Monday to Friday
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills in English; other languages an asset
- Ability to remain calm and relax patients
- Ability to work in a Hyperbaric environment, ability to perform job functions without direct supervision, and excellent interpersonal skills
- Performs moderate physical work exerting up to 50 pounds of force on a regular basis and up to 75 pounds of force on an occasional basis, performing such activities as finger manipulation, grasping, carrying, lifting, holding, reaching, opening, pulling, pushing, speaking, hearing, walking and writing
- Positive-minded and cheerful, and able to provide an excellent patient experience
