A Roof Over Your Head Society is a non-profit organization serving Antigonish and Guysborough. Advocating for people experiencing homelessness or precariously housed, the Housing Support Worker (HSW) will work to support individuals in need of assistance in obtaining safe and affordable housing.

Position Details

Reporting to the Lead Housing Support Worker and AROYH Board of Directors, the HSW will work approximately 24-30 hours per week for a term of three months beginning in January until March 31st 2023, with compensation to be considered based on education and experience. A university degree or college diploma in a related field, or equivalent education and/or experience is required. The candidate willhave a respectful and non-judgemental attitude, be knowledgeable and/or willing to learn about the impact of poverty and homelessness and have an interest in working with diverse social groups, non-profit organizations, and marginalized individuals and families.

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Using excellent professional written and verbal communication skills to connect to and develop relationships with clients, Board members, community partners, government agencies, and other organizations and/or businesses in the community.
  • Advocating for individuals experiencing homelessness, or at risk of homelessness, and referring them to community programs as appropriate.
  • Maintaining awareness of local community resources and assisting client in connecting with appropriate resources.
  • Conducting client interviews while professionally recording information on intake forms and documenting all interactions, while protecting confidential information.
  • Preparing and delivering reports to funding bodies, the AROYH Board, and as applicable.
  • Knowledge of (or willingness to learn about) the Nova Scotia Residential Tenancies Act, and ability to support and/or represent clients at hearings.
