POSITION SUMMARY

Provides nursing services as outlined below and in accordance with established standards, policies, and procedures.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Key Responsibilities

  • Performs those functions which provide for the basic care of Residents with acceptable standard of skill, with a sense of responsibility, and respect for privacy
  • Assists in the care process by observing and reporting changes in the Residents' physical and emotional condition. Knows the guidelines of assigned Residents as outlined in the resident care plans. Gives care according to these guidelines;
  • Participates in the overall activation process developed by the residence to promote the well-being of each Resident.
  • Assists in escorting Residents to specific programs and activities, in accordance with care packages;
  • Performs personal care and selected nursing measures to promote comfort and safety for the Resident in accordance with our standards of resident service and care packages;
  • Assists with the maintenance of records reflecting each Residents' condition, care and specific treatments Documents on daily flow sheets, progress notes and care plans as per system;
  • Maintains effective communication and good human relations with residents, families and colleagues. Works co-operatively with families, including them in Resident care needs)
  • Assists in maintaining a safe, neat, clean environment for Residents and personnel;
  • Shares responsibility for the care of the equipment in the residence and the personal belongings of the Residents as assigned;
  • Directs all inquiries regarding Residents' service and conditions to the Charge Nurse;
  • Assists in the training of new staff through the orientation period;
  • Recognizes safety hazards and the importance of providing a safe environment;
  • Attends in-service education in order to keep informed of current trends in health services practice. Participates in residence learning needs assessment;
  • Is knowledgeable of the Resident Rights; supports and promotes same;

Working Conditions

  • Prolonged standing and walking;
  • Lifting and moving of residents, equipment and supplies;
  • Repeated bending and stooping;
  • Exposure to Resident elements through regular Resident contact;
  • Stress resulting from dealing with Resident care needs and pressures;
  • Some use of visual and auditory sense in monitoring conditions of Resident’s during care.

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting alone, maximum 50 lbs. (5-25 lbs. Usual)
  • Lifting with assistance, maximum 160 lbs. (100-125 lbs. Usual) as a minor job function;
  • Pushing/pulling, using wheeled equipment such as carts, trolleys with contents that weigh a maximum of 100 lbs. (20-50 lbs. Usual) as a minor activity;
  • Stretching/reaching regularly throughout the shift as an essential job function.
  • Walking, with possibility of some upstairs walking, as a major job function; 6. Standing, for lengths of time, up to four hours maximum. (1-3 hours usual) as a major job function;
  • Bending/stooping on a regular frequency as a major job function;
  • Carries and transports objects of various sizes, to a maximum of 25 lbs. (5-15 lbs usual) as a minor job function;
  • Must be able to move and lift equipment and supplies of various sizes and weights ;
  • Must have visual and hearing acuity to recognize the need of assistance required by residents.

Health and Safety

  • Is aware of employee's responsibilities and follows all health and safety policies and procedures as set out in the employee safety program handbook and departmental manuals;
  • Works safely to reduce the risk of injury to self, co-workers, and Residents;
  • Is alert to and promptly reports all actual or potentially hazardous situations to immediate supervisor.
  • Wears personal protective equipment (or clothing) as required by task, S.D.S. or residence policy;
  • Promptly reports personal injury to supervisor and seeks first aid as needed;
  • Participates in fire safety demonstrations and fire drills, and knows the residence fire and emergency plans;

The Elden is a full-scale retirement residence. Hires will be based on the assisted living but expected to provide emergency response to the entire building.

Full-time, part-time and casual positions available for various shifts (24/7 operation).

Required Education, Skills and Qualifications

  • Required to be a graduate of an approved Personal Support Worker course or equivalent, as approved by the Director of Care;
  • It is preferred to have experience in working with seniors and/or chronic care residents in health care facility.
  • Good physical and mental health. Demonstrated maturity and tactfulness.
  • Must be able to communicate in English including written documentation. Has an acceptable standard of behavior and appearance.
  • Genuine interest in and concern for Residents.

The Elden is Bradford's first full-scale retirement residence. 148 suites on 6 floors, catering to both Independent Supportive Living as well as Assisted Living.
