The Litter Truck Operator 3 works under the supervision of the Streets Foreman and performs a variety of duties that include operating and maintaining vehicles and equipment of various sizes, performing work related activities to all aspects of street maintenance activities, operating and maintaining various types of tools and equipment, completing reports and records as required, maintaining shops, garage, yards and inventory of same, assisting in the training of employees, responding to customer service requests and assisting in Emergency Services. In the course of carrying out daily tasks, the incumbent practices established safety procedures in the execution of assigned duties.
As the Equipment Operator 3 - Litter Truck you will:
- Operate and maintain trucks and equipment of various sizes within the classification such as Tandem Axel and Single Axel refuse collection trucks, according to departmental procedures and performing assigned vehicle and equipment checks to ensure that equipment is functioning properly when operated.
- Empty and maintain litter bins throughout the City based on a system of maps and routes.
- Identify unsafe conditions while in the course of operating vehicles for daily activities, report and/or rectify irregularities, and retrieve misplaced materials (such as signs, lumber, barricades, etc.) as part of the department’s responsibility for safety in the public right-of-ways.
- Inspect and maintain the street system by identifying and recording all deficiencies and repair cut information, to enable prompt repairs to be initiated, and the carrying out of maintenance of same where directed.
- In the course of carrying out daily tasks, practice established safety rules and regulations.
- Operate various types of tools and equipment such as compressors, pumps, power tools, cutting tools, etc., as may be required and prior to operating them provides normal maintenance to ensure their continual availability and function.
- Respond to customer service requests by determining the nature of the concern and advising/carrying out appropriate corrective action, to ensure that services are provided to Departmental standards.
- Complete reports or records as required that the services are completed thoroughly, within budget and in accordance with departmental standards.
- Maintain cooperative working relations with other departments, divisions, branches or related work groups to enhance performance.
- Maintain vehicle, yard, and shop inventory by checking quantity and condition of supplies and replacing where necessary to ensure their continual and safe availability.
- Maintain shops, garage, and yards by locking, when unattended, and maintaining a clean, safe condition to ensure facility security and safety.
- Assist in the training of employees new to the classification by procedural example and demonstration so that proper task methods can be taught/learned through on-the-job experience.
- Perform related duties consistent with the classification, work overtime and various shifts, as required.
Your education and qualifications include:
- Grade 10 education or the equivalent combination of training an experience.
- Demonstrated ability to complete and maintain all necessary records as they relate to the job.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out all the duties of junior operator classifications within Streets Maintenance.
- Demonstrated ability to read and follow work related maps and routes.
- Ability to operate all equipment required to be utilized within this position, in a safe and effective manner.
- Working knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act and the Manual of Temporary Traffic Control.
- Thorough working knowledge of the varied functions of the Street Maintenance Branch, to include all applicable policies and procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precaution policies and regulations and the ability to adhere to and enforce safety rules and policies
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with employees at all levels of the organization, external contacts and the public.
Conditions of employment:
- Possess and maintain a valid Manitoba Class 3 Driver’s License with air brake endorsement.
- The successful applicant must maintain legal eligibility to work in Canada. If the successful applicant possesses a work permit, it is their responsibility to ensure the permit remains valid.
- Must be physically capable of performing the duties of the job, which may include, but are not limited to: working outdoors in potentially extreme weather conditions, lifting up to and sometimes over 50 lbs., getting in and out of the vehicle
- Must be willing to work various shifts including evenings, nights, weekends and/or holidays and extended hours as required.
