Driftpile Cree Nation (DCN) is a proud and culturally strong First Nation located between the towns of Slave Lake from the west, and High Prairie from the east, approximately 340 km northwest of Edmonton. The Nation is nestled on the south shore of Lesser Slave Lake. As the second-largest lake entirely within the Alberta boundaries Lesser Slave Lake is a stunning destination for birders and wildlife enthusiasts. JOB OVERVIEW: The Economic Development Officer (EDO) is a highly visible, accomplished professional, who reports to the Chief Administrative Officer. The EDO is responsible for developing and coordinating the implementation of an Economic Development Strategic Action Plan. He or she shall have a lead role in activities and initiatives that will attract investment and business opportunities to DCN and will actively support (and/or lead) business retention and expansion activities that will maintain and increase local employment in the Nation. The EDO shall use his/her expertise to help define the character and trajectory of economic growth within DCN by focusing on promoting the community, developing sustainable jobs matched to local employment needs and opportunities.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Act as a liaison between local organizations, businesses and individuals, along with representatives of government, business and industry, and other Indigenous communities concerning economic development and other areas as deemed necessary
  • Establish and support an Economic Development Strategic Action Plan
  • Represent the community at economic conferences at the local, regional and national levels
  • Provide advice regarding market analysis and economic opportunities
  • Identify opportunities for joint ventures and assist with any negotiations
  • Facilitate and/or set up workshops to help nation members develop and implement business plans
  • Manage Nation Agriculture fund, Fishing & Trapping fund, and Arts & Crafts fund
  • Create and manage Economic Development department budgets
  • Primary contact and liaison with Alberta Fish and Wildlife for Driftpile Cree Nation.
  • Management of financial allotment of funds contributed by the Nations Agriculture Benefits Claim
  • Research private and public real-estate and other economic funding opportunities for Driftpile Cree Nation as directed by Chief and Council, including but not limited to financial negotiations and economic feasibility studies.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree or post-secondary education in economics, commerce, business or public administration is preferred
  • 3 years + economic development experience in strategic planning and policy development
  • Ability to network and work effectively with Nation Leaders, communities, economic development professionals and all levels of government
  • The EDO must have the ability to: make good strategic decisions, demonstrate strong civic and community leadership, build relationships with economic development partners, the business community, and area municipalities.
  • Basic understanding of land use planning, real estate development, zoning and municipal infrastructure
  • Effective at public speaking and making presentations
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment with multiple tasks and projects at hand
  • Self-directed and able to work without supervision
  • Energetic and eager to tackle new projects and ideas
  • Must possess professional etiquette when receiving phone inquiries, and directs calls in an efficient and professional manner
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License and clean drivers abstract
  • Fluency in Cree is an asset
  • CPIC & IRC required
