The Opportunity
The Economic and Creative Development Department is part of the Infrastructure and Growth Management Division. This department is responsible for the attraction and facilitation of new business investment, and helping employers access the business opportunities of the area. They encourage and promote the creation of new Barrie-based enterprises, including start-ups and small business services. They also support the retention, growth, and expansion of the City's existing businesses. This includes bringing stakeholders together on strategic programs.
The Corporation is seeking a dedicated, enterprising, and results-oriented individual who has demonstrated a commitment to the values of professionalism and efficiency, empathy and sensitivity, co-operation and teamwork.
The successful candidate will work as part of a team and represent the City of Barrie while performing their duties. The majority of the time will be spent working independently outdoors conducting a business survey via door to door interviews. Data will be collected using an electronic device and a GIS-based survey application.
Surveyors will need to ensure the proper completion and accuracy of data and monitor and ensure follow-up with any missing information. This business survey tracks employment growth and monitors economic trends within the City of Barrie and is one of the most comprehensive surveys of its kind and will be used to guide regional and local policy formulation through trend analysis relating to business and employment. Overall, this position plays an integral role in the collection of data that will be shared with our community and our staff.
The incumbent will be provided with opportunities to learn about the various facets of municipal government and more specifically, the role of economic development by contributing to projects in the department’s portfolio including internal and external networking, job shadowing and project-based opportunities relevant to the student’s learning objectives and career goals.
The successful applicant to this position will perform and/or assist with the following tasks:
  • Collecting, inputting, and verifying data and information as required for the City of Barrie’s Business and Employer Data Survey.
  • Contacting businesses to gather information and data on business locations, types, and number of employees.
  • Daily use of survey software and hardware to collect information and data.
  • Researching business information using library resources.
  • Follow-up by telephone when required.
  • Elevating issues to the Project Lead when needed.
  • Regular travel throughout the City of Barrie for on-site information verification.

Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
  • Currently enrolled in or is a student in Secondary School, College, or University*
  • Minimum of 16 years of age or turning 16 by the end of the calendar year and must have attended one of the academic establishments listed above the year in which they are applying for employment and/or returning the following year
Experience
  • Three (3) months experience performing duties related to the above mentioned major responsibilities
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
  • Basic computer literacy using the following systems and software: Microsoft Office, as well as familiarity using tablet/electronic devices.Demonstrated ability to:
      • Maintain a high standard of public relations and professionalism at all times when communicating with business owners and Staff, eliciting information and responding to inquiries and complaints.
      • Interact effectively and courteously with all levels of Staff and contacts in a community/client service environment.
      • Work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team environment.
      • Achieve thoroughness and accuracy when collecting survey data.
      • Interpret and apply Statistics Canada’s NAICS codes.
      • Basic trouble-shooting of computer and software applications.
      • Proven time management skills.
  • Basic attention to detail, administrative, interpersonal, organizational, problem solving, time management, oral communication, and written communication skills
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License in good standing with a reliable vehicle for use on corporate business
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check*
  • Please note that this is a requirement of the position for any new employees to the City of Barrie in accordance with the Police Record Check Procedure. Existing employees will be grandparented from this requirement.

Other Important Information
Work Term: Approximately May 8, 2023 - August 25, 2023
Wage: $16.76 - $21.70 per hour
Hours: The normal hours of work are 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30 pm
